Quick answer: IGNOU MAPC is a 2-year (minimum) postgraduate MA Psychology programme with 64 credits. Year 1 has 6 compulsory papers (MPC-001 to MPC-006). Year 2 requires you to pick one of four specialisations (Clinical, Counselling, Industrial/Organisational, or Cross-Cultural), take 3-4 specialisation papers, complete an internship + practicum, and submit a dissertation. Each subject is 4 credits = 100 marks (70 TEE + 30 assignment, pass mark 40).

1. MAPC programme overview

The IGNOU Master of Arts in Psychology (MAPC) is a 64-credit postgraduate programme offered through distance education. It is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Distance Education Bureau (DEB). It is not, on its own, sufficient for Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) registration as a Clinical Psychologist; you need to follow it with an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology from an RCI-approved institute for that.

2. 1st year syllabus (6 compulsory papers)

Every MAPC student takes the same 6 papers in the first year. These build the foundation in cognitive, developmental, personality, social psychology, research methods, and statistics. Each is 4 credits, 100 marks.

The 1st year is a "common foundation" across all four specialisations. You cannot skip these or replace them. Plan to clear at least 4 of 6 in your first attempt; backlogs add a semester each.

3. 2nd year syllabus (pick one specialisation)

In year 2 you select one of four specialisations. Each specialisation has 3-4 core papers plus an internship/practicum (MPCE-026 for Counselling, equivalent codes for other tracks) and a dissertation (MPCE-036/036A).

Specialisation 1: Counselling Psychology

Specialisation 4: Cross-Cultural Psychology

The Cross-Cultural specialisation has limited reach historically and is being phased toward integration with other tracks. Most active students pick Counselling, Clinical, or I/O. Refer to the current IGNOU MAPC programme guide for cross-cultural subject codes if you are pursuing this track.

Stuck on which specialisation to pick?

Counselling is the most popular and the easiest to convert to private practice. Clinical is the prerequisite for M.Phil + RCI. I/O suits corporate-track candidates. Most ambiguous: pick Counselling unless you have a strong reason otherwise.

4. Exam & assignment pattern

Each MAPC subject has the same assessment structure:

ComponentMarksFormat
Assignment30One assignment per subject per semester. Submit before TEE. Tutor-marked.
TEE Section A20 (2 of 4 × 10)Long answers, ~450 words each. Theory-heavy.
TEE Section B24 (4 of 5 × 6)Medium answers, ~250 words each.
TEE Section C6 (2 of 3 × 3)Short notes, ~100 words each.
Total per subject100 (pass at 40)Assignment 30 + TEE 70.

Critical insight: the TEE is a 3-hour exam where you write Section A + B + C answers in 3 hours. The Section A long-answer questions are predictable, the same 12-15 topics repeat across every paper since 2018. We have ranked these by repeat frequency for each subject on the question bank page.

5. 90-day study plan (works for any subject)

Most students fail MAPC not because the content is hard but because they start studying too late. Here is a tested 90-day plan that prioritises the highest-yield 30% of topics.

Days 1-15: Mapping

Days 16-60: Deep dive on top topics

Days 61-80: Practice writing

Days 81-90: Last-mile

7. FAQs

How many subjects are in IGNOU MAPC?

IGNOU MAPC has 6 compulsory 1st-year papers (MPC-001 to MPC-006) plus 3-4 specialisation papers in the 2nd year, plus an internship report and a dissertation. Total: 12-14 components, 64 credits.

What are the 4 MAPC specialisations?

Clinical Psychology (MPCE-011/012/013), Counselling Psychology (MPCE-021/022/023/046), Industrial & Organisational Psychology (MPCE-031/032/033), and Cross-Cultural Psychology (limited reach). You pick one in the 2nd year.

How long does IGNOU MAPC take?

Minimum duration is 2 years. Maximum is 5 years. Most students complete in 2-3 years depending on assignment and dissertation pace.

Is IGNOU MAPC valid for RCI registration?

IGNOU MAPC is UGC-recognised but is not by itself sufficient for RCI (Rehabilitation Council of India) registration as a clinical psychologist. You need to follow it with an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology from an RCI-approved institute. The MAPC Clinical specialisation does count toward M.Phil eligibility, however.

Can I do IGNOU MAPC alongside a job?

Yes, the programme is designed for that. Most material is self-paced. The main constraints are the assignment deadline (one per subject per semester) and the TEE exam dates (June and December). Plan ~5-8 hours per week per subject during the build-up, ~15 hours per week in the final 30 days before TEE.

What is the IGNOU MAPC fee?

The 2026 programme fee is approximately INR 19,800 total (INR 9,900 per year), payable in two yearly instalments. Verify the current fee on the official IGNOU portal before applying.

Which is the easiest MAPC specialisation?

Subjectively, Counselling Psychology has the most repeatable question patterns and the most accessible textbook material. Statistics (MPC-006, 1st year) is the most-feared paper across all specialisations.
